No. 3 Women’s Hockey Looks to End ECAC Title Drought in Front of Home Fans
On Friday afternoon at Lynah Rink, No. 3 women’s hockey will face off with No. 9 Clarkson in the first ECAC tournament semifinal. With a win, the Red would advance to the championship game the next day with a chance to take home its first ECAC title since 2014. Since its last title win, Cornell (22-4-5, 16-2-4 ECAC) has qualified for the ECAC playoffs in all 10 seasons, made it to the semifinals six times, and made it to the finals in four. But for the Red, the past nine seasons have all ended the same way: heartbreak. In the 2015 ECAC championship decider, Cornell scored a goal early in…

No. 3 Women’s Hockey Wins Marathon ECAC Semifinal in Third Overtime Behind Bergmann’s 54 Saves
After a grueling four-hour, triple-overtime contest, women’s hockey is headed to the ECAC championship game. Senior forward Lily Delianedis scored twice in the 2-1 win, her second goal coming 85:54 minutes of ice time after her first. In real time? Between Delianedis’ goals, three hours and 31 minutes passed. 2:50 into the third overtime period, Clarkson was called for the game’s first penalty in since the games opening period. 43 seconds later, Delianedis lined up a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle. “I was shocked,” Delianedis said when asked what was going through her mind after scoring the game winning goal. “I think I just hugged the first person…

Women’s Hockey Stages Improbable Comeback in Final 70 Seconds to Sweep ECAC Quarterfinals
It’s difficult to describe what transpired in the last minute and a half of game two of the ECAC women’s hockey quarterfinals. Down a goal against Union — a team that has served as No. 3 women’s hockey’s kryptonite this season — Cornell managed to score not once, but twice in the game’s final moments to send the team to ECAC championship weekend. Coming a day after a gritty 3-0 win, the comeback completes a series sweep for the Red over Union, one of two ECAC teams Cornell lost to during the regular season. Thanks to goals with 1:09 and 0:27 left on the clock, Cornell will have a chance…

No. 3 Women’s Hockey Takes Hard-Fought Game One of ECAC Quarterfinals
Two weeks after clinching the ECAC regular season title, No. 3 women’s hockey’s quest to win its fifth ECAC tournament started off strong. The Red defeated Union 3-0, despite a heroic 39-save effort from the Garnet Charger netminder. “I think we played well,” said sophomore forward Karel Prefontaine. “We stuck to the game plan and I think we executed our plays well.” Cornell’s postseason began Friday evening in front of 1,570 fans at Lynah Rink, where four months prior Union defeated Cornell 3-2 to open the Red’s conference play. The first period opened with Cornell heavily pressuring Union netminder Sophie Matsoukas. The senior was forced to make save after save…

‘If You Don’t Win, You’re Done’: No. 3 Women’s Hockey Set To Face Union In ECAC Quarterfinals
Regular season champions No. 3 women’s hockey enters the ECAC playoffs with two conference losses. One loss came against then-No. 5 Colgate in a hard-fought battle at Lynah Rink among two of the top teams in the ECAC. The other? A 3-2 loss to Union, the Garnet Chargers’ first victory at Lynah Rink and second win over Cornell in program history. This weekend, the two teams will face off in Ithaca for a second, third and possibly fourth time this season. For both teams, the stakes are high. Union (13-21-1, 5-11-1 ECAC) is coming off its first playoff win in program history and needs to continue winning to keep its…

Five Key Moments from Women’s Hockey’s Regular Season
No. 3 women’s hockey beat Brown, 6-2, on Feb. 14, securing the program’s seventh regular season title — the first since before the pandemic. The title was no guarantee for the Red, which placed just third in the pre-season head coaches poll. Cornell’s season got off to a rough 1-3-1 start before head coach Doug Derraugh’s ’91 squad found its rhythm and rattled off a 12-game unbeaten streak. Alongside taking home the ECAC regular-season trophy, the Red (20-4-5, 16-2-4 ECAC) also secured the Ivy League title after going undefeated against the Ancient Eight. While the Red prepares for the ECAC quarterfinals against Union, The Sun takes a look back at…

Makenna Chokelal’s Journey From Medical Retirement to Cheering on Women’s Hockey, Advocating for Athlete Mental Health
At midnight on Feb. 17, 2024, Makenna Chokelal ’25 walked in the icy cold to greet the women’s hockey team with confetti poppers and a congratulatory sign after its victory over then No. 15 Yale to claim the Ivy League title. On Jan. 25, 2025, Chokelal made the same frigid walk to the bus to congratulate the team on its victory against Harvard. This time, her sign read “It’s two easy! Congrats champ!” referring to the team’s back-to-back titles. Meet Makenna Chokelal, known as women’s ice hockey “biggest fan” by her teammates and an advocate for athletes’ mental health following her medical retirement from the sport. Injury, Surgery and a…

No. 4 Women’s Hockey Sets Sights on ECAC Title, Honoring Seniors in Final Regular Season Weekend
The magic number is down to one. Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, No. 4 women’s hockey needs just a single win to capture the Red’s seventh ECAC regular season title. The last time Cornell won the ECAC was the 2019-2020 season, which ended in heartbreak for the then No. 1 Red when the NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19. For head coach Doug Derraugh ’91, getting back into the same conversation as that 2019-2020 team is cause for excitement. “It’s exciting that we’re even in the hunt to [win the ECAC for the first time since 2020],” Derraugh said. “This is a league that is…

Women’s Hockey Wins ECAC Regular Season Crown, Downs Brown 6-2
This has been updated. Despite graduating the best player in college hockey, being picked to finish third in the pre-season poll and starting the year 1-3-1, No. 4. women’s hockey has won the ECAC regular season championship. The Red defeated Brown, 6-2, at Lynah Rink on Friday night. It’s the first time Cornell has topped the conference since the 2019-2020 season, and the seventh time in program history. All seven of the titles have come during head coach Doug Derraugh’s ’91 tenure, and three of those times, Cornell has gone on to win the ECAC Tournament. By securing the top spot in the ECAC, Cornell (20-4-4, 16-2-3 ECAC) is guaranteed…

Offense Goes Dry as Women’s Hockey Ties Yale on Senior Day
After taking home the program’s seventh ECAC regular season championship the night before in a 6-2 win over Brown, No. 4 women’s hockey struggled to find the back of the net in a 1-1 tie with Yale. The Red tallied an impressive 37 shots on goal, but committed four penalties in the contest. Eventually, the Bulldog power play broke through, forcing the Red to settle for a tie and spoiling Cornell’s senior day celebrations. In honor of their final regular season game, head coach Doug Derraugh ’91 started five seniors alongside sophomore goaltender Annelies Bergmann, and ten of the 11 rostered seniors dressed for their final regular season contest. With…
