4/20 | LETTER TO THE EDITOR | A STEM Major’s Take on the Humanities
There is a reason that, when moving from grade school to college, STEAM loses the arts aspect and becomes STEM. The arts are superfluous and irrelevant, only used to get kids interested in the much more valuable science, technology, engineering and math required to be successful in life. After all, math is the universal language, and I’m a fluent speaker. It is impossible to get through a day without using math, the prime subject at the top of the objective hierarchy of importance. The Pythagorean Theorem allows me to optimize my route to class, cutting across the Arts Quad diagonally to follow the shortest possible path. I ensure that I’ve…

‘I Tend to Write in Pursuit of That Surprise’: Cornell Senior Visiting Lecturer Dan Rosenberg Named Tompkins County Poet Laureate
On Feb. 19, Cornell Senior Visiting Lecturer Dan Rosenberg, English, was named Tompkins County’s 12th Poet Laureate, a role created to honor local outstanding poets and bring poetry beyond the page and into public life. Rosenberg, who has published six works as a poet and currently teaches creative writing at Cornell University, spoke about the importance of poetry and expressed gratitude for the recognition in an interview with The Sun. “The point of [poetry] is to build a community around it and to share that work with people for whom it will matter,” Rosenberg said. “Being named the poet laureate for the county feels like a recognition of that work…

Unionized TCAT Workers Rally for Fair Contract as Negotiations Over Wages and Staffing Intensify
Employees represented by the United Auto Workers Local 2300 union rallied outside the Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit office on Thursday to generate support and awareness about their ongoing negotiations for a new contract. The TCAT oversees all bus lines that service Ithaca and Cornell. In December, the workers’s contracts expired, launching a series of negotiations between the union and TCAT management. According to a statement released on its website, the UAW Local 2300 “continues to focus on our priorities of fair wages for all members, equal pay for equal work, and ensuring staffing levels meet the needs of our community without forcing our members to work 6 days a week,…

‘Human Need, Not Corporate Greed,’ Cornell SIPS Advocacy Members Urge the Public to Stand Up For Science Amid Recent Executive Orders
About 150 School of Integrative Plant Science students, faculty and supporters assembled outside of Mann Library at 3 p.m. on Thursday. Protestors carried signs demanding access to science for all in the face of recent executive orders and echoed chants for “human need, not corporate greed.” Speakers called for members of the Ithaca community to “stand up for science,” emphasizing the loss of research funding through National Institutes of Health grants and the backpedaling of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at universities under the Trump administration. In response to President Trump’s Jan. 20 executive order on Unleashing American Energy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently froze funding to the Partnerships…

Women’s Lacrosse Breaks School Records, Improves to 3-1 on the Season
On Feb. 25, women’s lacrosse bested Niagara University by a score of 24-7 and set three single-game school records with 24 goals, 17 assists and 41 points. The Red thoroughly demonstrated its “red brick” symbol of the team — one that reflects the hard work and strive for excellence the team wants to uphold everyday. The Purple Eagles scored the first goal, but Cornell answered nearly 30 seconds later with a goal from senior midfielder Caitlin Slaminko. The team posted another seven goals before Niagara was able to respond. The Red’s strong offensive showing was led by senior attacker Kylie Gelabert and junior attacker Ella Wilmot. Combined, the two recorded…

BSU Holds ‘Emergency Meeting’ As Affinity Groups, Program Houses Are Threatened By Department of Education Guidelines
Black Students United held an “Emergency Meeting” Friday evening in response to a letter sent by the Department of Education ordering the elimination of “racial preferences” and race-conscious programs from admissions, hiring and institutional programming at federally funded educational institutions. At the forefront of the nearly 60-person meeting were concerns that community spaces for marginalized groups on campus would be targeted and closed. In the Instagram post announcing the event, BSU stated, “The Trump Administration looks to end affinity groups for marginalized people across all schools & universities … we won’t allow this to happen.” The Feb. 14 ED letter called the use of race in dormitories, such as some…

Cornell Ballet Club Takes the Stage With Debut Swan Lake Performance
Dancers in tutus fluttered their arms in a packed theatre resonating with the well-known classical music as Cornell Ballet Club performed their interpretation of Swan Lake’s second act on Saturday evening. Founded just seven months ago as the University’s first and only ballet club, CBC captivated its sold-out Schwartz Performing Arts Center audience with the beloved classic on Saturday night. CBC put unique spins on the production, making the show its own. Usually set on a moonlit lake, the rendition took place at a more familiar setting — Beebe Lake. The Swan Queens and their maidens are cursed by a spell that transforms them into swans by day. With no…

Earning A Spot: Jackson Marko’s Six-Hour Journey from Club to Division I Baseball
On Feb. 2, 2023, Jackson Marko woke up and got ready for a normal day as a freshman at Cornell University. Little did he know that at around 3 p.m., he would receive an email that would lead to the opportunity of a lifetime. Baseball head coach Dan Pepicelli was offering him the chance to stand in as a catcher for the Division I baseball team in the bullpens, amid injuries on the team. After Marko’s first practice with the team that night, Pepicelli would offer him a roster spot. In around six hours, Marko had transitioned to being a member of the varsity baseball team, after just one crucial…

Offense Comes Alive as Men’s Hockey Downs Brown 6-1
This story has been updated. PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Before men’s hockey took the ice on Friday, head coach Mike Schafer ’86 echoed the importance of defense. “We’re going to win 1-0, 2-1, and just take a more of a defensive mindset, because they’re getting frustrated with the fact that they’re not scoring,” Schafer said before the game. “You get in a funk like this, it happens, but the focus has got to be be physical, be disciplined, be good defensively [and] be patient.” The one goal on Brown’s side of the scoreboard was expected, as the team remained attuned to its defensive details all week. What was perhaps unexpected was…
