“People always worry about things you can’t control. Always,” said outgoing men’s hockey head coach Mike Schafer ’86. “And if you find that wisdom to know the difference between what you can control and what you can’t, you’ll live a happier life.” For 30 years, Schafer’s main obligations on the Hill were to lace up his skates, blow a whistle and coach hockey. A packed Call auditorium welcomed American actor and filmmaker Josh Radnor — best known for his role of Ted Mosby on the Emmy-award winning show “How I Met Your Mother” — for a Q&A session on Sunday evening. Radnor was invited by the Cornell University Program Board and Cornell Hillel as part of the Major Speaker series, which has brought Jewish figures like Josh Peck and Aly Raisman to the University. It was the photo seen around the world — a group of Black anti-war activists walking down the steps of Willard Straight Hall, rifles in hand and demands met. Ed Whitfield ’70, leader of the Cornell Afro-American Society — which is now Cornell Black Students United — helped organize the 36-hour occupation of Willard Straight Hall to protest racial injustice and the Vietnam War in 1969. At the time, tensions at Cornell and across college campuses were at their peak as groups on campus conducted teach-ins, protests and other demonstrations to bring attention to what they saw as an unjust war and lack of racial equality on campus. Cornell Community Reflects on Carl Sagan’s Legacy at 90th Birthday Celebration
Students, professors, alumni and stargazers alike gathered in Kennedy Hall on Nov. 9 to celebrate the life and legacy of Carl Sagan in a 90th birthday celebration hosted by the Carl Sagan Institute. Sagan was an astrophysicist, author and science communicator who was a faculty member at Cornell for nearly 30 years. He is widely credited for popularizing astronomy, pioneering efforts in the search for extraterrestrial life. The event’s speakers included Sagan’s widow Ann Druyan, renowned National Aeronautics and Space Administration flight surgeon Joseph Dervay and the founding director of the Carl Sagan Institute, Prof. Lisa Kaltenegger, astronomy.
