‘Awesome,’ ‘Powerful’ and ‘Electrifying’: Cornell Yamatai Packs Bailey Hall for Annual Drum Show

    April 16, 2025 /

Bailey Hall resounded with rhythms and beats as Cornell Yamatai presented Pulse 2025: Reflections, a 14-song production that encapsulated their annual Taiko drumming performance. Taiko, meaning “drum” in Japanese, is a traditional style of Japanese drumming rooted in Buddhist and Shinto religions. Though the practice is a historical form of classical art, it has recently modernized to over 4,000 groups across North America.  The 26 members of the University’s only Taiko drumming ensemble were accompanied by guest performer Miyako Seki, a member of the professional Japanese Taiko group Bonten who travelled to Cornell from Japan to perform. Together, the ensemble performed a fiery two hour long show. The production comes…

‘Frog’ Rock Band Performs Electric Concert in Willard Straight Hall

    March 11, 2025 /

New York-based rock guitar band, Frog, performed an energetic concert in Willard Straight Hall on Saturday led by Daniel Bateman, featuring a queer synth-punk indie rock band called the FMs. Cornell Concert Commissions presented the free concert, drawing members of the Ithaca community of all ages to see the group perform. Some listeners sported Frog merchandise, such as frog-themed hats and purses and tie-dyed shirts matching the one Matte Namer, FMs’ vocalist, wore on stage.  Frog was created by guitarist Daniel Bateman and lead drummer Thomas White. Bateman had White learn the drums to complement his guitar playing, and from there they created their first album. White later moved to…

LGBTQ+ Student Town Hall Emphasizes Admin Support for Queer Students

    March 8, 2025 /

A panel of Cornell faculty discussed the recent executive orders targeting marginalized Americans and replied to LGBTQ+ students’ concerns in a town hall event on Tuesday evening at the Willard Straight Memorial Room. The LGBT Resource Center hosted this “LGBTQ+ Student Town Hall” alongside other student organizations like Haven, La Asociación Latina, QGrads and the Gender Equity Resource Center. Tina Coyne, interim associate dean and director of the LGBT Resource Center, said the town hall took the form of a panel followed by a Q&A period in order to inform students of relevant legal, healthcare and campus-related information. The panel follows recent federal policy changes relevant to LGBTQ+ students, such…

‘Expression of Defiance’: Ed Whitfield ’70 Reflects on His Participation in 1969 Straight Hall Takeover

    March 2, 2025 /

It was the photo seen around the world — a group of Black anti-war activists walking down the steps of Willard Straight Hall, rifles in hand and demands met.  Ed Whitfield ’70, leader of the Cornell Afro-American Society — which is now Cornell Black Students United — helped organize the 36-hour occupation of Willard Straight Hall to protest racial injustice and the Vietnam War in 1969.  At the time, tensions at Cornell and across college campuses were at their peak as groups on campus conducted teach-ins, protests and other demonstrations to bring attention to what they saw as an unjust war and lack of racial equality on campus.  In an…

Reid Fleishman’s ’25 Passionate Pursuit of Sustainability at Morrison Dining Hall

    February 21, 2025 /

Those who have eaten at Morrison Dining Hall are already familiar with the work of Reid Fleishman ’25.  When Morrison Dining first opened its doors in January 2022, it used reusable utensils, cups and dishware. However, the unique setup of the dining hall posed significant challenges.  The Morrison dishroom is located underground and connected by a moving carousel system. According to Fleishman, silverware frequently fell off the carousel and sometimes even became lodged in unexpected places, such as the ceiling. Coupled with understaffing, these issues made it extremely time-consuming for staff to manage the workload. As a result, Morrison had to revert to using paper plates and bowls to keep…
