As we approach the end of April, Sustainability Month at Cornell, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on what Cornell is doing — and more importantly, what we all can do — to fight food waste on campus. Cornell Dining has implemented a variety of behind-the-scenes changes that many students and staff might not even realize are happening. These efforts are effective, thoughtful and crucial — but they can’t succeed without broader community participation. BSU and Cornell Dining Collaborate to Celebrate Black History Month
Amid President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders aiming to ban diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, Cornellians are finding ways to commemorate their diverse student body. In celebration of Black History Month, Black Students United and Cornell Dining have partnered to bring a variety of traditional African dishes to dining halls throughout the month. Nearly all dining halls have been designated a specific day and country to showcase dishes representing the culinary classics of that nation. So far, dining halls have given students a taste of five different cuisines, ranging from Sierra Leone to Somalia. Big Red Food Court: A New York-Style Dining Experience Set to Open on College Avenue
Big Red Food Court will open its doors on Feb. 20, bringing a taste of New York City to Ithaca. Following the unexpected closure of Ithaca Beer Co. in March 2024, College Avenue had a 4,000-square-foot vacancy, sparking curiosity among students about what new establishment will fill the space. The space was bought by Manager Amir Ali in January, and now will be filled by the Big Red Food Court — a New York-style deli. Bustling delis and New York City food courts inspired Ali’s design of the new restaurant. Reid Fleishman’s ’25 Passionate Pursuit of Sustainability at Morrison Dining Hall
Those who have eaten at Morrison Dining Hall are already familiar with the work of Reid Fleishman ’25. When Morrison Dining first opened its doors in January 2022, it used reusable utensils, cups and dishware. However, the unique setup of the dining hall posed significant challenges. The Morrison dishroom is located underground and connected by a moving carousel system. According to Fleishman, silverware frequently fell off the carousel and sometimes even became lodged in unexpected places, such as the ceiling. Coupled with understaffing, these issues made it extremely time-consuming for staff to manage the workload. As a result, Morrison had to revert to using paper plates and bowls to keep…

The real question that needs to be answered once and for all is: which is better? While I firmly believe in the philosophy that “West is best,” West is not a convenient walk from North Campus.
