LETTER TO THE EDITOR | An Open Letter to Cornellians for Israel: A Plea for Moral Consistency

    April 25, 2025 /

Having learned from President Michael Kotlikoff’s email about the decision to cancel Kehlani — whom I hadn’t heard of before April 23 — as this year’s Slope Day headliner, I wanted to better understand the opposition to her invitation. The Cornell Daily Sun linked to the petition that Cornellians for Israel had circulated. According to The Sun, the petition claimed that Kehlani’s public calls for “intifada” and to “dismantle Israel” made “Jewish students feel unsafe.” But the link only thanks the signatories to the petition for their part in the group’s success in disinviting Kehlani — the petition’s content has vanished. I have no personal stake in Slope Day or…

Cornellians for Israel Petitions Against Slope Day Headliner Kehlani

    April 23, 2025 /

Cornellians for Israel launched a petition against the selection of Kehlani as this year’s Slope Day headliner, stating that the use of “her platform to publicly call for the ‘intifada’ and to ‘dismantle Israel’” makes Jewish students feel unsafe. The petition, which has reached over 5,200 signatures in four days, calls on the University to create “an alternative experience.”  Kehlani was announced as the Slope Day headliner on April 10 and since then has faced backlash. Addressing the Student Assembly on Thursday, President Michael Kotlikoff criticized Kehlani’s Slope Day headline but said that it was “too late to secure another performer.”  The petition expressed Jewish students’ anger and safety concerns…

Cornellians in the Pros: Women’s Hockey Edition

    April 21, 2025 /

With the National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s hockey season over, women’s hockey’s Class of 2029 yet to be released and the Professional Women’s Hockey League draft still months away, now seems like as good a time as any to check in on Cornell women’s hockey alumni in the pros.  In 2023, three Cornellians were picked in the inaugural PWHL draft and four more were signed as free agents heading into the league’s first season. While Marlene Boissonnault ’19 and Lauriane Rougeau ’13 were not re-signed heading into the 2024-2025 season, the addition of Izzy Daniel ’24 brings the total number of Cornellians currently in the PWHL to six. Here is…

Look Up, Cornellians! Annual Leonids Meteor Shower Will Peak This Saturday

    February 21, 2025 /

Ithacans and Cornellians will be able to observe the annual Leonids meteor shower this Saturday, Nov. 16. This shower is called “Leonids” because the meteors appear to emerge from within the constellation Leo.  The Leonid meteor shower is annually active throughout the month of November, generally peaking around Nov. 17 or 18. This year, it will peak on Nov. 16 and 17 and can be seen from the Northern Hemisphere. This Saturday, the weather is predicted to be partly cloudy in the evening, with more clouds later at night.  A meteor is a rock from outer space that enters Earth’s atmosphere. The heat generated as the rock falls creates a…

Better Matches, Stronger Bonds: Perfect Match’s New Algorithm Brings Cornellians Together

    February 21, 2025 /

Ahead of Valentine’s Day, over 5,000 Cornellians eagerly registered for Perfect Match in hopes of finding love. Every year, the matchmaking system uses a comprehensive algorithm developed by students. Participants complete a survey listing a variety of personal preferences and character traits to find their perfect match.  The program has been matching thousands of students since 2019, when it was developed by Jamal Hashim ’22 to lift spirits and reduce isolation on campus. However, last year, the team behind Perfect Match was met with threatening messages by students outraged by a six-hour delay in matches due to the high number of survey responses. This year, the team took many steps…
